SLJ, DAY 5, WEEK 1, Blink And You'll Miss It

DAY 5:

Activity 1:

Towering Timbers:

I think that there can still be loggers but to keep them confined in a small area in the forest, making sure to check that there are no animals in or around the tree. My Mother came from the Houston timber mills down in Hari Hari, and My Fathers family also came from a mill. As long as there are still more native forest then there is logged forest.

Living On The Edge:

Letter To My Family From Tundra:

Dear Mum and Dad,
Here in Tundra it is so cold I am wear about 3 layers or cloths every day sometimes more!!! Going outside we have meet many Arctic Hares, Snowy Owls, and Arctic Foxes, We have even seen some Reindeer!!! The area we are in is so pretty and we are learning heaps from the old traditions and the effect climate change has in the place. It feels pretty weird not having trees surrounding us like back home!! My Favorite animal is differently the Arctic Foxes, they are so cute, and the way they jump around looking for mice to eat is so cute. You should really come to see this place one day.
See you Soon!!!

Activity 3:

Going, Going... Gone:

Living in New Zealand is amazing, being surrounded by seas, trees, and great views. Coming to live here so long, I forget how beautiful my surroundings are. The fresh air through New Zealand is great. I live where to the front you see the sea - where he sun sets - and to the back is the mountains - where the sun rises - and in the middle of fields of grass. The birds and frogs, crickets and cows, dogs and cats, goats and chickens, all ways filling your ears with sounds. Where you hear horns and cars thought out the day, I hear native animals, but all so in the city parts we all so hear, the cars and horns. New Zealand is an amazing country made up of amazing sounds, sights, and air. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else!!!

DAY 3:

Activity 1:

My Monster:
Tower over you at 10 foot 5, the monster closes it's distance with you. It could have looked like a normal 15 year old boy, but he has an unrecognisable burn mark, looking like a spreading burn blister,  but glowing green, he was tall and skinny, his fingers where the size of pencils with long pointy nails. Long jet black hair falling down his face failing to cover up the terrible scar. It was one of those faces that you just can't forget, it is stuck in your mind forever. The smell of cooking flesh has filled the air crawling up your nose and into your stomach. The sound of heaving breathing and loud, fast heart beating waver in your ear as you realise that, that nose is coming from you. A long tentical unwraps from the boys waist, you never noticed that he has a tentical as an arm, hearing the loud snap of the tentical gives you the chills.

Activity 2:

The Secretive Skink

PROS                                                                              CONS
You would get to live with you best friend!               You would have barely any family near your home
You could always be around wildlife & nature          It wouldn't be very quite with all the animals
There won't be many cars!!                                        You would be living at work!!

Activity 3:

World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

One of the many animals that the WWF help are freshwater seals.
To help these freshwater seals the WWF build snow banks for the seals so the they can dig holes in them so their pups can be born with some shelter. If they do not do this up to half of the pups can die.
The success the WWF have had are to help the pups to survive so that the species do not die off over time.

SLJ, Week 1 Day 1 In The Beginning

DAY 1

Activity 1:

Top 3 Fun Facts:

30% of New Zealand's land is covered in forestry.

Aotearoa means, land of the long white cloud, and Aotearoa is also the Maori name for New Zealand.

'Once Were Warriors', 'The Whale Rider', 'The Piano', and 'Lord of The Rings' are the most popular movies in New Zealand.

Activity 2:

North and South:

I live in barrytown on the west coast of the south island, where you can find many pieces of jade. (Also known as pounamu or green stone.) There are many black sand gold mines here, where they are slowly finding their fortune. On the little farm that I live on, most of the land has been mined.  You can see where it has been mined because the grass in the summer goes very dry and yellow in summer (there is very little top soil and loads of stones), where as in the places that haven't been mined, they are still dry but are visibly greener. Also near barrytown is Punakaiki where after hundreds of years, the sea has formed stones that look like pancakes hence they got the name pancake rocks. In the West Coast you will find that there are many coal mines or there once were many coalmines. I live over the Paparoa Ranges from the biggest mine disaster that  happened on the west coast. 29 people died and the fire is still going after 8 years, they are only just starting to make plans about reentering the mine. So that's where I live and whats special about it!

Activity 3:

Ice, Ice Baby:

Looking Back At 2018

Year 7 in Totara 2 has been amazing. I have loved being in Miss Hine's class and I have improved so much in my learning. I was really nervous going into Totara, but it's not that bad! Here is a tiny reflection on 2018!!

The best thing about 2018 & why.

The best thing about 2018 was Mistletoe bay camp. I have never been to the Marlborough sounds. It is so pretty out there, and filled with great activity's. My favourite activity was archery, and paddle boarding (even though I feel off heaps!!) At mistletoe bay they are very eco friendly. The water at Misletoe bay is so clear, blue, and filled with many sea animals, like sting-ray, dolphins, and fish. It is definitely a camp I would go to again!

Something you are proud of that you have done in 2018 & why.

I have a few things that I am proud of and here they are, first I am proud of moving up four stainine  from a 5 to a 9, I have either improved a lot or am very good at guessing!!   Second I am proud of coming first in my contemporary for the 11 years and under age group, it was the first time I had do my solo, the judge said I am a very promising contemporary dancer, and thanks to Miss Hines  for hinting that the judge doesn't like shoes!!! Third I am proud of getting a high of 100 in 2.05 minutes for basic facts, my goal was to get 100 in 5 minutes, I think I succeeded in that goal!!! Lastly I am proud of getting 1st in shot put at the west coast for year 7 girls 2018, I got a high of 7.27 meters, this is my third year running getting first.

Your goal/goals for 2019.

My goal for 2019 is to put my hand up of everything, and become a leader within the school. Helping out with teachers, Sharon, Debbie, and Nigel. Putting my hand up for things like the production, choir, kapahaka, prep, and things like that. I would also like to achieve all of my leader ship badges, and maybe do a few main stars.

I have really enjoyed this year and I hope to have another great year next year, being a year 8 next year sounds so weird, the year has gone by so fast, and before I know it I will be starting high school, that sounds scary!! I can't wait till Monday where I find out my class for next year, and Christmas concert. Next year sounds so exciting, and I can't wait to find out what will be happening!!
