SLJ, DAY 2, WEEK 1, Forest Life

DAY 2:

Activity 1:

Giants Among Us:

I would really like to see Tāne Mahuta, Kauri die back is spreading around the big tree and could soon be infected. Tāne Mahuta is an old Kauri tree and the largest one standing today, it's age is not known today but it is estimated to be around 1,250 and 2,500 years old. Seeing it for what could be the last time sounds really sad, as so many legends and myths will be dieing with it, but if we are lucky Kauri dieback could miss Tāne Mahuta all together.

Activity 2:

Fabulous Ferns:

Basketball:               Women:          Tall Ferns

Netball:                     Women:          Silver Ferns

Rugby: (Union)        Women:          Black Ferns

Rugby: League         Women:          Kiwi Ferns

Cricket:                     Women:          White Ferns

My Favourite Uniform is the black ferns uniform, probably because it's something like what I would wear!

Activity 3:

Weird and Wonderful:

3ml of water every day for a year to feed a plant, how much water do you use for the one plant?
3ml x 365

That equals 1,095ml

  1. Hello Iris,

It's Katelynn here. I saw you were doing the summer learning journey and thought I might pop onto your blog and see how your going!

I like how you have gone out of the box and choosen an extra 2 teams for 'Fabulous Ferns'. What team did you find most interesting? Maybe next time you could add some colour to your writing or present it in a slide or google drawing! Other than that it was amazing!

I also like the way you have choose to work out 'Weird and Wonderful' activity I chose the same way it just seemed the most simple, don't you think! Maybe next time in this activity you could add a picture of a cactus so we know what one looks like cause some people may not know! Anyways other than that your activities look A-MAZ-ING!

Keep up all of your great work, Iris and good luck for the rest of the SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY!!!!!

Merry Christmas, and enjoy your holidays!

  2. Hi Iris

It's Allie from the SLJ team. Well done with this activity. I really like your presentation.
It is really sad that the disease that is effecting the Kauri trees is actually getting close to Tane Mahuta. I do hope that they will be able to stop it before it gets to him. I am lucky enough to have seen Tane Mahuta as I was born in Northland and lived up there as a child. He truly is a magnificent site and well worth the trip to see him. I really hope that you are able to see him at some stage. You will have to put this on your bucket list!!
Good job finding all the teams with the ferns in their titles. We really do have some amazing sports teams and people in New Zealand. Its great that you like the Black Ferns uniforms. They have done so well as a team this year. Not only taking our the world cup but last week they scoped the awards ahead of the All Blacks at the end of year rugby awards. No surprises but I would pick the Silver Ferns!!
I am sure that you had no problems sorting out the maths problem. I hope that you worked this out yourself and didn't use a calculator??
If you could show me your working out for this problem that would be great. Three mils a day is not much water but when you add it up over the year it is quite a lot.

Hope you have having a great holiday so far Iris. Keep up the good work.

    Until next time

    Allie :)
